Bandiera d'Italia, or il Tricolore, was adopted in 1946. One understanding of the Italian flag’s colors is that the green represents the country’s vast hills, white are the Alps, and red is the blood spilt in Wars of Italian Independence. Another theory states that the colors are based on the uniform colors of the civic militia in Milan, in around 1796 [1, 2, 3].
